Tai Chi & Qigong Consultant

Faculty,Paradise Valley Community College

The overall purpose of this class is to help people improve: their body balance, the health of nine body joints, and breathing movements to reduce stress. This program is designed for people to improve their balance and stability while standing, walking, or turning. In addition, people will be shown exercises that are designed to improve the health and flexibility of nine joints. And finally, people will be shown deep breathing exercises to help relax the body and relieve stress and tension. As an added bonus, periodically throughout the program, individual exercises will be introduced to strengthen specific areas such as the hips, thighs, shoulders, etc.

The program is set up to be half hour sessions offered once a week in the morning at 11am. All sessions will be held at the Healthy Outlook Family Medicine's exercise room. The cost for each session will be $5, and is paid when they come to class. Five session loyalty passes will be offered at $20. The class size will be open, so that people can attend based on their schedules. The more the merrier.

Each session will be the same, with the periodic addition of specific exercises for targeted areas. Basically, each session will begin with warm up exercises designed to stretch the body, then balance and stability exercises while moving, then joint stretching and strengthening exercises, and finally breathing exercises to relax and calm the body.

The overall purpose of this class is to introduce a basic exercise class using Tai Chi and Qigong movements. Tai Chi has long been known as “moving relaxation” and is practiced by more people around the world, then any other exercise activity. The overall goal of this class is to help people improve: overall body balance, body flexibility, body strength, and body stress relief. This program is designed to introduce people to a short basic Tai Chi exercise form that can be later expanded into a longer form. These Tai Chi exercises are designed to improve balance and stability while moving. In addition, muscle flexibility and strength will be targeted. Also, Qigong deep breathing exercises while moving will help bring oxygen into the body and help cleanse the body of toxins, such as carbon dioxide (CO2). And finally, special relaxation music will be played throughout the session to calm and relax the body and mind.

Each session will be the same, with warm up exercises to strengthen and stretch the body. Then Qigong Deep breathing movements will continue to help stretch the muscles and bring fresh oxygen into the body. A simple exercise to help aline the spine will be introduce before the actual Tai Chi exercises begin. The short Tai Chi exercise program will then be introduced and students will learn 6 basic movements. The design of this program will be to help students learn how to “flow” from one movement to the next. Qigong deep breathing will then be presented and students will learn how to coordinate their breathing with the Tai Chi movements. The Tai Chi exercises will be repeated several times to lengthen and enhance the overall benefits of the this “moving relaxation” experience. In later sessions, the option to learn a longer form showing 11 movements can easily be added.

The program is setup to be half hour sessions offered once a week in the morning at 11:30am. All sessions will be held at the Healthy Outlook Family Medicine's exercise room. The cost of the session will be $5, and is paid when the student comes to class. Five session “loyalty” passes will be offered at $20 each.
